At the siege of Lisbon (1147), the knight Martim Moniz saw a gate of the Moorish castle open slightly. He threw himself into it and blocked it with his own body, dying crushed so that it would not close again — long enough for Afonso Henriques' companions to rush in and take the castle. A Lisbon square and a metro station bear his name: the city never closed that gate again.
Au siège de Lisbonne (1147), le chevalier Martim Moniz vit une porte du château maure s'entrouvrir. Il s'y jeta et la bloqua de son propre corps, mourant écrasé pour qu'elle ne se referme pas — le temps que les compagnons d'Afonso Henriques s'engouffrent et prennent le château. Une place de Lisbonne et une station de métro portent son nom : la ville n'a jamais refermé cette porte-là.
